T1 Bay 31 Apron Modification Works

As part of a major upgrade of Terminal 1 at Sydney Airport, Antoun was contracted to upgrade Bay 31 which would accommodate the new generation of Code E aircraft and improve access for ground support equipment.

The scope of works included:

  • Demolish and remove the existing single nose loader aerobridge
  • Completely refurbish the existing fixed link bridge to new architectural specifications and facilitate access to two new aerobridges
  • Install rotunda pad footings for the installation for the new aerobridges
  • Realign and reconfigure the airside road to suit new aircraft, including excavation and flexible pavement installation
  • New line marking and installation of traffic control signage, service connections and safety controls

Challenges

Installation of the rotunda pad footings required millimetre accuracy to ensure that the new aerobridge would connect properly to the fixed link; the project team worked closely with surveyors, client designers and the two other contractors working on the aerobridge and Joint User Hydrant Installation (JUHI) components of the project.

Work was carried in an operational airport environment during both regular and curfew hours. All project staff hold an Aviation Security ID Card (ASIC) and were required to undertake Drug and Alcohol awareness training in line with Sydney Airport requirements.
