The Balmain East Ferry Wharf was delivered as part of the NSW Government’s $770 million Transport Access Program –an initiative to deliver modern, safe and accessible transport infrastructure. The works included the upgrade of a heritage seawall, construction of a piled retaining wall, construction of new bus turning bay, and architectural finishes adjacent to new garden areas.
Managing multiple subcontractors
A rigorous approach to planning and project management contributed to the management of multiple subcontractors during the life of this project working within a relatively small project zone while maintaining pedestrian access and alleviating traffic congestion.
Prior to the commencement of piling works the site was remediated. Contaminated materials were removed, significant heritage discoveries were documented and the existing heritage sandstone seawall was refurbished.
Exceeding time expectations
The project outcomes met and in some cases exceeded expectations with minimal impact to the general public. The project team utilised new technologies and innovative solutions to fast-track the overall project duration.
